They’ve switched off all the lights
they’re out to lunch
they’ve all gone to the party
they’re having tea and scones
the hatter calls for silence
there falls a deathly hush
they listen with their eyes
hang on his every word
well alice doesn’t know
she doesn’t understand
so she doesn’t say a word
but slowly lifts her hand
the hatter clears his throat
and stares in disbelief
all the heads there turn to her
she wants to disappear

I only want to ask
about what you just said
I don’t want to cause offence
but it didn’t quite make sense

there’ll be no questions here
shut up and drink your tea
the hatter said no more
and everyone agreed
so she didn’t say a word
she didn’t raise her hand
and still she didn’t know
she didn’t understand
