In short: We are here for the music. Abuse will result in content deletion and/or entire account deletion, without warning or notice.
We rely on alonetoners to communicate expectations, moderate their comments, and report abusive behavior or content. We do not actively seek out content to moderate, but we investigate abuse reports and will without notice delete anything that we determine to be in violation of these guidelines, including entire accounts.
Building a strong community
alonetone users bring wildly different perspectives, ideas, and experiences. They range from people who created their first track last week to people who have been making music for 50 years.
The primary purpose of the alonetone community is to share your music with the world. We maintain the site, but this is a community we build together.
Be welcoming and open-minded.
Other alonetoners may not have the same experience level or background as you, but that doesn't mean they don't have good ideas to contribute. Be welcoming in comments and discussions.
Assume no malice.
People are here from all over the world, and may be speaking in their second language. Humans make mistakes, and differences of opinion are normal. Approach conflict from the perspective that people generally mean well. This promotes a friendly atmosphere where people feel comfortable commenting, participating in discussions, etc.
Stay on topic.
People use alonetone to share their music and connect with audience and other musicians. Off topic comments are a distraction (sometimes welcome, but usually not). Save those for the "Off Topic" forum.
Communicating with strangers on the Internet can be awkward. It's hard to convey or read tone, and sarcasm is misunderstood. Use clear language, and think about how it will be received by the other person.
What if something or someone offends you?
We rely on the community to alert us to issues. We do not actively monitor for offensive content. If you run into something or someone on the site that you find objectionable:
Do not engage with trolls or escalate arguments. It takes 2 or more people to argue, so when in doubt, deescalate and leave things alone. Take a deep breath and remember you are here for the music.
You have the ability to moderate (delete) comments on your own tracks.
You can report abuse to firstname.lastname@example.org. Provide as much detail and context as you can.
What is not allowed and considered abuse?
We do not tolerate behavior that crosses the line into:
- Threats of Violence
- Hate speech and discrimination
- Bullying and harassment. This means any habitual badgering or intimidation targeted at a specific person or group of people. In general, if your actions are unwanted and you continue to engage, there's a good chance you are headed into bullying or harassment territory.
- Doxxing or invasion of privacy
- Spam. This is repeated or inappropriate posting of tracks or comments in order to get attention
What happens when someone breaks the rules?
Sure, sometimes people may say or do inappropriate things for any number of reasons. Maybe they did not realize how their words would be perceived. Maybe they let their emotions get the best of them. But others just want to spam, get attention or pick fights.
If we find abuse we will, without hesitation or notice remove the offending tracks, comments, forum posts, etc.
If it's a recurring issue or the sole aim of the account seems to be to break these guidelines, we will without hesitation or notice, delete the account with everything in it, permanently and irrecoverably.
Alonetone is a community service. We're not some startup hoping to make it big or some mega site selling you ads like facebook or twitter. We're musicians who have invested 1000s of hours to provide this service for free. Each incident personally costs time that could be spent making alonetone a great place to be. Think of us as your hosts at a big party: we will always make quick, swift judgements to ensure the rest of the party feels safe and welcome.
