I NEVER DREAM

I never dream of building bridges. I never dream I’ll build a dam
I never dreamed of a cathedral for the mighty God, I Am
I never dreamed of founding clinics or make donations to the cause
I don’t see my name on statues and I don’t miss the way it was
On the plaques beneath bronze horses are the names of those who died
And I’d rather be alive than be the answer loved ones sigh
But I dreamed we met for breakfast and I dreamed I held your hand
And I dreamed I said, “I’m sorry,” when you cried
And I dreamed I took biology so I could sit by you.
And I dreamed I sat there naked by your side

I never dream of a new element or a rocket bound for space
I never dream I find a bone that will explain the human race
I never dream of new invention like Tesla clear and bold
I never dream about the royalties if a song of mine is sold
I never dream of taking classes. Graduating in a robe
I just want to understand some of the things I know
But I dreamed that I should kiss you. And I dreamed you kissed me back
And I dreamed that you were happy so I was bold
And yes, your skin is satin and yes your smile’s the light
That brightens all the corners of my soul
So, I dream of dimes and pennies that I find along the road
Enough to buy the things to build our life
And tho they all be little dreams, I’m happy they are mine

So today, for some reason I decided to read the words first.. Just the words. And found it an absolutely beautiful experience. The metaphors you use to describe great and cosmic plans and intentions of great societal achievement, contrasted with the lines that begin with, "BUT I dreamed we met for breakfast".... (the switch and the contrast is very powerful) what a tiny, common human thing: meeting over the sharing of food,. Then followed by, "I dreamed I held your hand"... human touch/connection, as though those two simple things are worth more than all the highest achievements of worldly fame, and material ladders climbed! Which they are. They so are. The rest of the lyrics continue to develop & express that idea beautifully. Then I listened to the sing, and although it is good as a song, For me, the words in themselves stand strong and impactful w/o anything else. Not to contrast them and say one is "better" than the other. Just that sometimes I see lyrics that stand alone, And just saying, these words do that very well. Gwyn Henry

I wonder how this very good song would sound now, if recorded with the more "mature" voice that 10 years has given JMT? Good song, VERY good album! I always thought this album was underappreciated... but... that is true for the whole discography of JMT!
