Derivative

Derivative- This one was not supposed to be on the album, but I changed my mind and worked on it. The reason for the intended omission was because the riff, which I have been playing with for a few months, just sounded so derivative of Dear Prudence in the verses part. It isn’t exactly the same, but the descending bassline on the guitar is fairly reminiscent of that song. As a joke, I started singing derivative (the word itself) and making up lyrics about how there was nothing I have done the Beatles didn’t do better. It was all for fun complete with me aping Lennon, but when I later found the recording on my little recorder I thought, hmmm, maybe I could actually make this a real song. So, I headed into the month thinking, why not? I laid down a basic track, which is what you hear in the beginning part and then decided I would really rip off the Fab Four by making it all psychedelic after a certain point. I couldn’t recreate the feel of the joke lyrics, so I wrote this bit about someone who is jammed up in a relationship because the other person is trying to substitute them for someone they lost, i.e., derivative. Hence “the drawing of a picture of a photocopy of a painting of a picture of a memory.”
