Track two of my Record Production Month 2026 project.
I made an initial rough song sketch for this track, but didn’t like it. I was feeling a bit stuck and was getting really annoyed by the dripping snow melt-water from the roof that was dripping down in a downspout that was just a few feet away on the other side of the wall. I had an “Aha!” moment when I realized that would make for a great foundation to build the track on. Rather than using a sample I picked out a DX7 sound that was a decent approximation the Clave-Drum preset, so I could have it be rhythmic and melodic in turns. Most of the rhythms are a simple metronomic beat from that sound, with it doubling the rate a few times before it accelerates to the fastest pace, then slows back down. I was able to really get in the zone and play the DX7 Castepiano preset I found for the main improvised keys tracks for each of those tempos, and then had a shorter segment that I built into a repeating pattern for the horns solo on the xd, which was also mostly improvised. The Typhon on drone/bass duty rounded things out well.
