Slave Ships

Inspired by a poem by Henry Longfellow:

Slave Ships

Beneath a mighty ocean
Lying buried in the sand
Are the bones of men in chains
With shackled feet and hands

Slave ships sunk in raging storms
Their freight forever restless
Glaring from the great abyss
Demanding we confess

Chorus:
Our tireless history carried on
Recording what mankind had done
Men and women’s lives were sold
Flesh and blood turned into gold

Bridge:
Good men killed the aberration
They fought wars for emancipation
But the cries of countless tortured souls
Weigh heavy on the final toll

Chorus:
Our tireless history carried on
Recording what mankind had done
Men and women’s lives were sold
Flesh and blood turned into gold
