You Don't Know Me

I see a lot of medical professionals these days because I am disabled and taking 5 prescriptions a day to stay above ground. One of those meds is a blood thinner called Coumadin. Chances are good you have some elder in your extended family who is taking it. What the doctors do not tell you is that Coumadin was developed from an ingredient used in rat poison. Even worse, eating foods rich in Vitamin K like lettuce, broccolli, and cabbage counteracts Coumadin’s effects. So the doctors tell you to cut back on eating such foods … which is, obviously, insane because such foods are some of the healthiest things you can eat. But that is the world we live in. There are blood thinners which are not counteracted by the aforementioned foods, but insurance companies typically will not pay for them. Crazy people, crazy world. The ARNP playing the role of doctor for me is currently upset at me because I tried to discuss with her adjusting my Coumadin dosage to allow me to eat at least one serving of the aforementioned foods every other day. I wrote this tune as I was thinking about how she really did not know me at all, but rather assumed I was some ignorant, formerly indigent, fool who was not wise enough to follow her medical advice blindly.

During the 5-6 years of training, the amount of time medical students spend on nutrition can be measured in hours. Who is behind the education curriculum for our health-care professionals and what is their agenda? Agree with your sentiments - our own research into our particular health issues is the best help we are likely to get..
