ONCE I THOUGHT
Gene Eric Mann
Psychedelic Folk tune I wrote when I was younger and could sing in a higher key. I bull-headedly recorded this years later in its original key. Starry Nightmoth does the ambient background KB work.
ONCE I THOUGHT (The Telephone)
Once I thought I was in love
But she took and broke my heart
Called me up on the telephone
Says she wants to make a new start
But how can I see through the line?
What does it show?
Wires and juice don’t tell the truth
How can I know?
Once I thought our fling would last
Then she went and ran away
Then one day, well, she gave a ring
Says this time forever she’ll stay
Once I thought we had it made
Well, I guess she had to roam
Left some words on her own machine
Said again, “You’re welcome back home”
If only I could see her face
And look into her eyes
If only I could see a trace
Of truth within her lies
If I could see across the line
And look into her soul
If I could only see a sign
If only I could know
