One More Day

Maggie’s beautiful, heartbreaking hymn to loved ones lost too soon.

The intense, somber feeling of loss, both individual and communal, and support in the room as the other 6 or 7 of us listened to Maggie and Sara Beth perform the first take of this song is an experience that I’ll remember and treasure for the rest of my days.

Maggie Cole - Songwriting, lyrics, lead vocals
Sara Beth Craven Dortch - Guitar, harmony vocals
Margaret Bibb - Harmony vocals
Kevin Craig - Recording, mixing

One More Day

And the rain pours down, and I stand in its midst and pray,
Crying “Lord, won’t you wash all of these tears away?”
And help me, God, to stand
One more day.

You were my sweet little one,
I promised I would keep you safe from harm.
I held you close and kept you all through the night.
Then the strong March winds, they came,
They swiftly took you away from me.
I cried to myself, “Oh, how could I let you down?”
Oh, come back, baby,
I’m begging you for one more round.

Oh, the rain pours down, and I stand in its midst and pray,
Crying “Lord, won’t you wash all of these tears away?”
And help me, God, to stand
One more day.

Oh, you heard that battle cry,
You softly kissed me my last goodbye,
You loaded up your gear and headed off down the road.
I stayed back safe at home,
Wondering just how long you’d be gone,
Praying that you’d make it back to me safe and sound.
Oh, come back darling,
I’m begging you for one more round.

Oh, the rain pours down, and I stand in its midst and pray,
Crying “Lord, won’t you wash all of these tears away?”
And help me, God, to stand
One more day.

Oh, the demons in your mind
Had you when you should’ve been mine,
I tried to give you a happy, healthy life.
But the past that you had seen,
It just kept cutting in between.
The last time I saw you,
It brought me to the ground.
Oh, come back, dear,
I’m begging you for one more round.

Oh, the rain pours down, and I stand in its midst and pray,
Crying “Lord, won’t you wash all of these tears away?”
And help me, God, to stand
One more day.

Now the sun goes down,
And I fall to my knees and pray,
Crying, “Thank you, Lord, for helping me find a way.
“Yes, thank you, God, for keeping me
“One more day.”
