Love can be complicated in this mixed-up world.

Production notes: We recorded Leum’s first couple of passes at the vocals and guitar on 2/4. After listening back, he said he wanted someone else to re-record the guitar parts (Robbie, Matt, Nick, or somebody else). Since I was running a fever and kind of out of sorts at the following 2/11 recording session, I didn’t think to ask Robbie to record anything before he left that day. Then, at the end of the busy recording day on 2/18, I happened to check my notes and remembered Leum’s request. With Margaret’s assistance on the laptop, I recorded a couple of takes on Mike’s 12-string Martin and Margaret’s 6-string PRS acoustic. Unfortunately, the D to C#min chord change in the chorus was pretty daunting for my drummer fingers, and the timing was always a little off. Fortunately, Nick and I had figured out how to use stretch markers in Reaper a couple of weeks earlier, so I was able to tweak some of the more egregious guitar timing issues and ended up salvaging both parts.

Then, when my Uncle Billy came by the studio on 2/25, I realized that I hadn’t heard him play bass at all in a while, and definitely hadn’t heard him play my bass with its new set of strings, so he was kind enough to put down a couple of bass takes before he left for the day. (Thanks again!)

Later that day, Leum laid down another vocal take, thanked Sara Beth for bringing her accordion, and politely asked us to move on to another song before we attempted to record said accordion for this song. 😊

Silence is Sound

You say that you love me, you tell me it’s true.
You ask why you’d ever pretend.
Whatever the reason, I can’t feel your words,
and it’s something I don’t comprehend.

We live in a world where up can be down,
Where right can be left, where silence is sound.
Where heroes are villains, where sinners are saints,
Where doing what’s right means doing what ain’t.

You want me to take you where you’ve never been,
And believe in our own fairy tale.
But life isn’t told in some magazine,
It’s more than a story to sell.

We live in a world where judgment is swift,
Where light can be dark, where cruelty’s a gift.
Where heroes are villains, where sinners are saints,
Where doing what’s best is doing what ain’t.

All that I know is here in my heart,
And since the beginning, it’s true.
You can’t fill the void in somebody’s world
By simply saying you do.

We live in a world where up can be down,
Where right can be left, where silence is sound.
Where heroes are villains, where sinners are saints,
Where doing what’s right means doing what ain’t.

You say that you love me, you tell me it’s true.
You ask why you’d ever pretend.
I’m walking away from the best thing I’ve seen.
I guess you could call it the end.

We live in a world where it’s okay to lie
And okay to cheat with the right alibi.
Where excuses are many, no honesty found.
Where right can be left, where silence is sound.

Saved!
