Capo 2 in C
This is a true story. Cody even permitted me to use his name.

Cody is a cowboy, a horseman, that’s for sure
Traded in his guitar for long John underwear
Every day he pulls his boots almost to his knees
Oh, Cody is a cowboy. A yodel le de he.

Just a punk from California in that Texas cow pie land.
Cody studied horses. Taking lessons from the man.
With a spread out west with Cowtown tattooed on his arm.
Cody’s rising bright and early. Brightest student on the farm

But a call from California keeps whisperin’ in his ear.
Callin’ out for Cody, “We still need you here.”

But Cody was the favorite of the old man at that farm.
When Cody said he’s leaving he said, “But you are my right arm.
And you’ll live to regret it I double damn guarantee.
I’ll have a big surprise for you and you’ll be missing me.”

But that call from California kept whisperin’ in his ear.
Callin’ out for Cody, “We still need you here.”

That morning cold and early, the day he’s supposed to leave,
Cody grabbed a pail of oats, wiped his forehead on his sleeve.
The horse’s eager whinny as he opened that barn door
He found one old man and one spent pistol spread there on the floor…

Cody is a cowboy, a horseman, that’s for sure.
Traded in his guitar for long John underwear
Every day he pulls his boots almost to his knees
Oh, Cody is a cowboy. A yodel le de he.

I like it James Michael Taylor! Under which conditions do you record. Do you have an chorus? Great Californian Legend and my friend Cody is leading actor :-)

Thanks for sharing the facts behind the song. I think you should include this information in the "about" section of the song page, above the lyrics. People need to know this is a true story. I'm glad you wrote it, it's a story that needed told, but it is sad.

I dig westerns, and I like this music and the way you strum and sang it. But the lyrics, the story told, is quite sad.
