Project X

Is it theft or merely borrowing? That’s the question I ask of the drum part on this.

This one goes back to around 1997 when I originally wrote it and recorded the parts on a borrowed 4-track cassette recorder. For the drums, I put together a looped drum track from the intro of the live version of “Alone Together” by the 77’s (thank you, Bruce Spencer). I’ve always heard it as a soul tune as done during Stax Records’ golden age.

I decided to give it a go again for the 2019 RPM Challenge. I ditched the drum loop for variation in choruses and bridge and added a pseudo B3 organ to make it sound more like a Booker T. & the M.G.’s track. I had the opportunity to meet Booker T. Jones in November, 2016, so maybe something rubbed off onto me at that time.
