This is the demo version of Razorsongs, an album which had the aim of combining my electronic and industrial affinities with a more adventurous, progressive and experimental style of songwriting.
Razorsongs is also the first time I have incorporated recorder-playing into my original work. I am using an Elody electric recorder, which has a pickup and can be overdriven in some very fun ways. The recorder is actually my main instrument, for which I trained classically. I have since left classical music behind but for a while I have wanted to use my chops for… something. And that turned out to be this record. It’s been the first time in years that I have actually played my main instrument, but I hope to keep the electric recorder as a constant going forward, because I think it works as a good companion to the music I make now.
The album was written for Record Production Month and February Album Writing Month 2026. This was actually not the cleanest combination - FAWM is focused on composition and is aimed at reaching 14 tracks, while RPM is focused on production and has a smaller minimum of 10 tracks, or 35 minutes (whichever is higher). I produced or contributed to 14 tracks, so ‘won’ FAWM, but one track did not fit the album’s theming, one would have taken too long to fully produce and one was a collaboration with other FAWM members, hence the 11-track listing.
This is, for now, a preview of what’s to come. I enjoyed developing the material enough that I intend to tidy it up in subsequent months, do some rerecordings and get it professionally mixed!
