Well its not really a concept album. There’s a tenuous narrative thread, certainly, concerning the overthrow, flight and subsequent execution of the Pope, but its not really a… Ok, its a concept album. Taking the prophecy of the 12th century St Malachy - that the next Pope will be the last one - this album imagines the overthrow of the Vatican coming to pass, and in the process invokes the ghosts of not only St Malachy but also William Blake. You cant have too many spectres, thats always been our rule of thumb. Incidentally, the title track really was recorded on a dark & stormy night…perhaps some of the elemental ambience transfered itself to the track ? The thunderclaps came from a special effects album, though….
