The Sea Captain (Maiden on the Shore)

Pat Bondi here at Alonetone does a great and quite different version of this folk song entitled Maiden on the Shore, so I dug into my demo archives and found this version that I recorded long ago. Long before the Internet, I used to listen to all the old Folkways records in the library listening room, and my version was based on my hazy memory of Paul Clayton’s version: https://youtu.be/hccSO6kkq1s

THE SEA CAPTAIN (MAIDEN ON THE SHORE)

It was of a sea captain who followed the sea.
Let the winds blow high or blow low O.
“I shall die, I shall die,” the sea captain did cry,
“If I don’t get that maiden on the shore O,
If I don’t get that maiden on the shore.”

This captain had jewels, this captain had gold,
This captain had costly a ware O.
And all he would share with his crew if they’d dare,
To lure that maiden from the shore O
To lure that maiden from the shore

With great persuasions they got her on board,
The weather being fine and clear O.
And she sang so sweet, so neat and complete,
That she sang all the seamen to sleep O
She sang all the seamen to sleep O
She sang all the seamen to sleep

She took all his jewels, and she took all his gold,
She took all his costly a ware O.
And she took his broadsword to make her an oar,
And she paddled her way to the shore O
She paddled her way to the shore O
She paddled her way to the shore

“O were my men drunk or were my men mad,
Or were my men deep in despair O,
To let her away with her beauty so gay
To roam all alone on the shore O,
To roam all alone on the shore?”

It was of a sea captain who followed the sea.
Let the winds blow high or blow low O.
“I shall die, I shall die,” the sea captain did cry,
“If I don’t get that maiden on the shore O,
If I don’t get that maiden on the shore.”
