CALEB'S REPRIEVE 030220 - DOG AT THE GATE
James Michael Taylor
From an idea in a poem by Pete Thompson.
CALEBB’S RETRIEVE
jmt/Pete Thompson
The crowd is restless
It’s a quarter til noon
They’re for a hangin’
And it better be soon
Sun’s beaten’ down
The Law’s not in town
Hangman’s dirty boots tapping’ slow
Dragged from his cell
Caleb is pale
Oh, for a drink
Is all he can think
Sun’s beaten’ down
The Law’s not in town
Hangman’s dirty boots tapping’ slow
Kids fight for a view
Little girls are here too
Trap door is set
A dollar a bet
Sun’s beaten’ down
The Law’s not in town
Hangman’s dirty boots tapping’ slow
There was a time, to cheat was a crime
A card up a sleeve, could leave one to grieve
A noose in it’s place
Up a side Caleb’s face
When off to the West
There’s a whisper of dust
Sun’s beating down
The Law’s back in town
Hangman’s Guilty Boots tapping slow…
