THE WALLET OUTLASTED THE LADY 121311 - I PLAY C
James Michael Taylor
THE WALLET OUTLASTED THE LADY
I was 20. She was 15
I was her prince. She was my queen
We shared our dreams
Yeah, we shared ’em all
We shared the large
We shared the small
It must have been the Christmas of 1963.
She took a $10 bill, and spent the whole thing on me…
She bought me a wallet. It was leather and black
A wallet I was proud to wear on my back
But, the wallet outlasted the lady
I wear it to this day
The wallet outlasted the lady
What more is there to say
Well, she lives down in Austin with her husband now
Their friends think they’re happy. I wonder how
You see, she calls me up, once, every two or three years
Tells me her troubles. Tells me her fears
But, the wallet outlasted the lady
I wear it to this day
The wallet outlasted the lady
What more is there to say
I’ve worn it in my right hip pocket ever since that time
Except when I was in jail. Didn’t have a dime
Strange, a little thing made out of leather
Outlasts something that’s supposed to last forever
And the wallet outlasted the lady
I wear it to this day
The wallet outlasted the lady
What more is there to say
