Maybe I shouldn’t tell you what I was thinking
The first time I saw that sad smile in your eyes
I couldn’t look away, and I don’t recall blinking
It might’ve been better if we’d just said simple goodbyes
I’ve been down this road before once or twice

Maybe I saw what I wanted to see
It isn’t the first time I might’ve told myself lies
There’s so much I thought you wanted to be
So much I thought I had read in your eyes
I guess I was wrong and now I’m paying the price

I’ve been waiting so long
On a world you couldn’t see
But it’s time I stop writing love songs
For the girl you never were or wanted to be

The longer you hold on, the harder it is to let go
Soon I’ll be thinking of you as someone I used to know

Maybe someday we’ll both look back and have a laugh
Or maybe that laughter will keep me from crying
And maybe each day that goes by will take away half
Of what’s left of me that isn’t still dying
I’ve never been all that good at lying
