The Heart Remembers
Keith Landry
For Kristen…
We were immortal, you and I
Alongside my sea, beneath your sky
No need to fear tomorrow
Now I see our time was borrowed
I’ll sit here rhyming by your side
And play till we see a lower tide
Lay out the course we’ll travel
And laugh when it comes unraveled
Someday, we’ll both surrender
But always the heart remembers
Your present and past are one and the same
Remember my face when I say your name
So we’ll walk by our sea with you holding my hand
Time will tell what will be, but we won’t count the sand
“The ocean is wide,” wise men say
We’ll look up the tides and plan our day
There’s no need to fear tomorrow
Everyone’s time is borrowed
Someday, we’ll both surrender
But always the heart remembers
Your present and past are one and the same
Remember my face when I say your name
