Watts
Nick Mauro
I wrote Watts in dedication to my former jazz teacher Judd Watts, who passed away in 2005. I started studying with Judd early in high school. He spent many hours teaching me about the music that I have spent my life trying to learn. It’s based on the changes to Tadd Dameron’s tune “On a misty night” in which Coltrane plays a beautiful head and solo. Judd was one of the many unsung heroes of this music and since Coltrane was one of his major influences, it seemed appropriate to dedicate the tune to him.
I took some lessons from Judd in the late 90's. During my first lesson he came to my house (in his van!) and asked me what I wanted to get out of the lessons. I stupidly answered to play like John Coltrane. He said, "Well, that ain't gonna happen!", but then he took the time to explain why. I gave him a complicated e flat book of songs that was given to me by my late uncle Hort Warner (who played sax professionally in the Waterbury area), thinking he would use it more than me. I always wanted to ask Judd for the book back but missed that opportunity. RIP Judd.
