Didn’t We? © Nick Torres 11/11/2025

A distant symphony of lawnmowers,
weed whackers whine in the air,
chain-link fences hunched over,
Like rusted-out old men in unheard prayer.

The porch light flickers,
But it’s not lit for me anymore.
I know there’s nothing waiting,
for me behind that door.
Like you,
Like what we were,
We had something once, didn’t we?

I thought we’d outlast cracks in the sidewalk,
I got that one wrong too, I know.
made our plans on sticky notes and calendars,
but when it’s your time to go,
…you go

Repeat Chorus

Bridge
In our valley, a train whistle fades,
like memories of all things past.
I sit in a bar whose name I can’t place
the names of the songs I can’t grasp
memories are ghosts for those who survive.
watching the peeling paint and the rust,
Swallow the corners of my life

Repeat Chorus
