thank you for the blues
Nick Torres
I was listening to Billie Holiday and this idea popped into my head. I think this is more suited for a woman’s voice, so I’ll re-post when that’s recorded.
You’d drop the needle careful
Like it might scare the blues away
Sunday dancing in the kitchen
Bare feet on tile as the record played
You said, “Listen close now, baby”
When Billie sang it low
I’d smile and kiss your shoulder
Swaying to a blue I didn’t know
Chorus
Thank you for the blues
If I hadn’t loved you
I wouldn’t know this hue
Or how deep losing cuts through
This sorrow isn’t cruel
It’s just what love will do
So thank you for the blues
I’m still dancing in the kitchen
Eyes closed and I’m with you
I never understood the words
Now it feels like my song too
The record spins just like it did
But I let the blue come through
Now I know what Billie meant
’Cause I know what she knew
Thank you for the blues
If I hadn’t loved you
I wouldn’t know this hue
Or how deep losing cuts through
This sorrow isn’t cruel
It’s just what love will do
So thank you for the blues
Bridge
Blue in the evening window
Blue in the morning sky
Blue in the space beside me
Where you used to lie
I used to think it was just music
Just something sad and slow
Now it colors everything
Everywhere I go
Thank you for the blues
If I hadn’t loved you
I wouldn’t know this hue
Or how deep losing cuts through
This sorrow isn’t cruel
It’s just what love will do
So thank you for the blues
