Just Out of Reach

August 20 - Wrote the lyric to the prompt “Just Out of Reach,” though I’ve experienced this when I was younger and even sometimes today, I was thinking a lot about one of my best friends who has never married or had a long-term relationship. Every time he finds someone special it just doesn’t last, and maybe that’s ok.

VERSE:
Sunny southern Oklahoma
You were young and wild and free
Two young lovers holding hands
A perfect reality

Oh those summer memories
Blue skies every morning
Diving in without a care
Didn’t catch the early warning

PRE:
Smiles and kisses
Slowly turned into tears
When he turned away
Confirming your worst fears

CHORUS:
He was Just Out of Reach
Couldn’t open his heart to you
He was Just Out of Reach
Wasn’t anything you could do
Hidden in his sadness
Felt he should be alone
Unwilling to make a commitment
But didn’t want to be on his own
He was Just Out of Reach

VERSE:
He drifted off and showed up late
Didn’t seem much like himself
Wouldn’t look you in the eye
Too much baggage on his shelf

PRE:
He was changing
His lack of interest was showing
Then one day you realized
And found yourself knowing

CHORUS:
He was Just Out of Reach
Couldn’t open his heart to you
He was Just Out of Reach
Wasn’t anything you could do
Hidden in his sadness
Felt he should be alone
Unwilling to make a commitment
But didn’t want to be on his own
He was Just Out of Reach
