Long Island City
Jeff Gordon
Week 10 challenge - Place Name. I lived in LIC for about 4 of the 10 years that I lived in NYC. While mostly not a true story, I do love Long Island City - it’s very close to Manhattan and has a distinct and individual charm. For those who don’t know, LIC is in the NYC borough of Queens and is directly across the East River from Manhattan, one subway stop from Grand Central, and now there is a very cool ferry that is a quick ride to the City. Returned last summer for a visit and it has changed a lot in the last 20ish years.
V1:
Paul moved his piano
To my small studio apartment
When he went to Russia
For his masters degree
That’s when I met you
Jagged sidewalk, your friendly smile
It was love at first sight
I thought we would last forever
PRE1:
Con Edison smokestacks left behind
Walkin’ the Queensborough bridge to unwind
The sound of the “7” train rattles my mind
CHORUS:
Long Island City
Where we were never apart
Long Island City
Now it fills the hole in my heart
Where you used to be
Now I’ll never flee
‘Cause all that’s left for me
Is Long Island City
V2:
I think about you night and day
Losing you was like a shadow
In the long summer twilight
That never seems to fade
But I will never lose this place
The way that I lost you
Your memory lingers here
So I’ll stay here forever
PRE2:
Vernon-Jackson subway station is mine
The giant Pepsi sign kinda looks like a shrine
Industrial buildings lookin’ so fine
CHORUS:
Long Island City
Where we were never apart
Long Island City
Now it fills the hole in my heart
Where you used to be
Now I’ll never flee
‘Cause all that’s left for me
Is Long Island City
This is a great song! The feeling reminds me of Billy Joel A bit... in a good way.
