Moving Target

This was written while I was working in a studio back in 1994 or 95. It was originally just a few little piano licks that I arranged into a song. I remember at the time I had trouble playing some of the parts on guitar, and some of the sections were difficult to sing. Having re-recorded it all today I can say that it is beyond just difficult. This would be impossible to sing live, and if I tried playing the guitar part all the way through live it would be riddled with mistakes.

The guitars are all Les Pauls except the second solo (the one without the guitarmonies) which is ES-335.

Verse 1
somewhere between now and forever
I could have turned out so much better
I tried to make it look like it happened
for some great purpose
I was mistaken

somewhere between this now and forever
I tried to make it all last forever
The sky was golden the air was breezy
now I am broken helpless and crazy

Chorus
Is it just me or is it everyone
It just seems like I’m the only one
Is someone there somebody answer me
This can’t be how it’s supposed to be

Verse 2
somewhere between faithful and hopeless
I went from happy to totally useless
I didn’t mean to I tried to change things
But I continue to keep on failing

Somewhere between now and forever
I could have turned out so much better
I tried to make it look like it happened
for some great purpose
I was mistaken

outro
I am still I’m never moving
all alone I’m done with running
If I try to start things going
then I’d be a moving target
