5mi (2014)

11 tracks by Room 34

On July 5, 2014 I ran in a 5-mile race called the "Hog Jog" in my hometown of Austin, Minnesota (birthplace of Spam). I had forgotten to pack my headphones, so I was unable to run with music as is my preference. Instead the rhythms of my breathing and my footsteps created a kind of minimalist composition that propelled me forward. On the night of July 8, I set about creating a piece of music inspired by that experience. This is the result: a 43-plus minute piece (the duration of my run in the race), at 92 BPM (my average running tempo), and exactly 1000 measures long. The proper context in which to hear this is as a single 43:40 track, but it's too big to upload here! The uninterrupted version is available on my website: http://music.room34.com/albums/5mi

Soundtrack for an Endless Winter (2013)

6 tracks by Room 34

This winter in Minneapolis feels like it will never end. In contrast, this EP is a mercifully short 17 minutes. Recorded and mixed entirely in GarageBand on the iPhone and iPad.

The Picture of Dorian Mode (2013)

8 tracks by Room 34

My submission for the 2013 RPM Challenge, this album was recorded and mixed entirely using GarageBand on the iPad, with its built-in instruments. Cover art designed on iPad. Final mastering and retouching of the cover art was done on my Mac with Sound Studio and Photoshop. All composition, recording and post-production took place from February 1-3, 2013. And... yes, every track is in Dorian mode.

Sleep (Sample Tracks) (2012)

5 tracks by Room 34

Sleep is an album that was inspired by my 6-year-old daughter, with cover art based on a drawing by my 9-year-old son. It is a sonic journey into, through, and out of the landscape of sleep and dreams. Instrumentation includes acoustic and electric guitars, electric bass, clarinet, MIDI keyboards and percussion, iPad and iPhone, with vocals on "Eyes Closed, Mind Awake." Winter Sketches Volume Three (2012)

3 tracks by Room 34

For the third year in a row, I have recorded a 3-song EP of rough sketches of musical ideas in the dead of winter: the Winter Sketches EP. As preparation for my concept for this year's RPM Challenge, ALL SOUNDS on all three tracks were produced using only an iPhone.

Greatest Hits LIVE! (Side 1) (2011)

4 tracks by Room 34

For a while I've been contemplating re-recording some of my earlier songs from 2001-2007. This is the beginning of that project. I have created a separate playlist containing the original versions of these tracks, if you care (dare?) to compare.
