On July 5, 2014 I ran in a 5-mile race called the “Hog Jog” in my hometown of Austin, Minnesota (birthplace of Spam). I had forgotten to pack my headphones, so I was unable to run with music as is my preference. Instead the rhythms of my breathing and my footsteps created a kind of minimalist composition that propelled me forward.
On the night of July 8, I set about creating a piece of music inspired by that experience. This is the result: a 43-plus minute piece (the duration of my run in the race), at 92 BPM (my average running tempo), and exactly 1000 measures long.
The proper context in which to hear this is as a single 43:40 track, but it’s too big to upload here! The uninterrupted version is available on my website: http://music.room34.com/albums/5mi
