Organic Jam
Spice Rack Collective
This short track also spawned from Robbie’s “E Rock Jam”, though in a more roundabout way than Sugar Free Jam earlier on the album.
On 2/17, we recorded John’s drum tracks for the full 5-minute song, then got a take of Cody playing keys along with the drum and guitar tracks. If I remember right, he’d listened to the track a couple of times on the way to the studio, then maybe once more before we recorded, so he was literally playing by ear. At that point in the day, we’d been recording for several hours and needed to wrap up early, so we ended up shutting down the recording session after that one take and just jamming on some cover songs for a little while before Cody departed.
I think the original plan was to intersperse the keyboard parts with lead guitar and vocals to be recorded later, so when those parts didn’t materialize, we effectively had a 5-minute organ solo on top of Robbie’s rhythm guitar track and John’s drums. The early part of the keyboard track was Cody trying out a couple of organ and piano voices on the keyboard, so I (Kevin) trimmed the song down to just shy of three minutes, moved around some of the keyboard bits and pieces, and added a fuzz bass part I recorded at home on the night before final mixdown. I hope it sounds like the three of us could have recorded the whole thing as a single take live from the floor, but even if not, it’s still a fun listen!
