An American Folk song of uncertain origin, dating to the 19th century. A short rendition of a version that tells the story of trader who fell in love with the daughter of the Oneida Iroquois chief Shenandoah (1710-1816) who lived in the central New York town of Oneida Castle. He was a co-founder of the Oneida Academy which became Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. He is buried on the college campus grounds.
I made this recording as a (very rough) practice demo for our neighborhood bluegrass group; so please overlook and forgive all the unprofessionalism. On this version I attempted to fill the breaks with mandolin; but Dan, our mandolin player, and Tom on guitar, will do a LOT better.
Taylor guitar; upright bass; octave mandolin; mandolin.
