Cold Wind Lullaby
Carla & Paul aka Butterfly Division
The wind blew in from the holler last night,
Carried the sound of a baby’s cry,
But the crib lays empty, the candle’s dim,
And the moon won’t meet my eye.
She holds a blanket, worn and torn,
Like a ghost of love that once was warm,
She hums a tune, soft and low,
For a child who ain’t comin’ home.
Oh, the cold wind sings a lullaby,
Through the broken trees and the midnight sky,
Time rolls on, but it don’t roll back,
A love so small, lost in the black.
I built a swing by the garden wall,
It creaks and sways but that ain’t all,
The world moves fast, but we stand still,
Frozen in a winter chill.
The neighbors whisper, “Let ‘em be,”
A sorrow deeper than the sea,
She don’t talk, and I don’t pray,
Just count the years, fade awa
Oh, the cold wind sings a lullaby,
Through the broken trees and the midnight sky,
Time rolls on, but it don’t roll back,
A love so small, lost in the black.
Maybe someday the sun will rise,
And paint new colors in her eyes,
Maybe I’ll wake and find my breath,
No longer sleepin’ next to death.
The wind blew in from the holler last night,
Carried the sound of a baby’s cry,
But the crib lays empty, the candle’s dim,
And the moon won’t meet my eye.
