Sarah Josepha Hale

Here is my contribution to the January 2022 Solo Songwriting Challenge offered by the Minnesota Association of Songwriters. The goal was to take an idea from another song without plagiarizing and incorporate it in a new way.
I chose a Public Domain song, “Mary Had A Little Lamb” and used a few notes from the melody, then wrote a song about the Author of the poem.
Sarah Josepha Hale. A remarkable person in history.
Sarah Josepha Hale, she had a poet’s mind
With an air of dignity, she never was unkind
Perfect prose and poetry is how she made her way
What drove her to such destiny I really couldn’t say
“Mary’s lamb” and other poems came early in her life
She married young, had children, became a widowed wife
Even with adversity she seemed to make her way
She held on to those memories by wearing black each day
Driven by a mission to do the best she can
Sarah was the sturdy oak resilient to the end
She always had a lofty goal and a selfless plan
Sarah was a driving force with paper and a pen
“There is no impossibility, of him who stands prepared
to conquer every hazard” The fearful are the failing”

Driven by a mission to do the best she can
Sarah was the sturdy oak resilient to the end
She always had a lofty goal and a selfless plan
Sarah was a driving force with paper and a pen
Came back for another listen. Love this so much. I can imagine you doing a whole album about historic subjects. I’d definitely listen to that!
You are amazing! What a great subject and cool to have this lovely look at history set to your beautiful music. I really love the chorus!
