“The Backyard”
Lyrics and Music by Daniel Parkhill

Met my friends in the backyard
In the summer I was lookin’ to be a man.
Didn’t know how it would change me, raise me.
But I didn’t think about that.

Every Sunday we’d wake up,
And paint the town red like a gang of misfit toys.
Didn’t think it was that big of a deal at the time,
But you don’t think about that.

Now I’m a grown up and life’s not a show
And the taxes will crucify me.
But when I kick back, relax, I reminisce and I laugh
Like I did in two thousand and three.

The baseball field in the backyard
Still reminds me of days that we were there.
Got the cops called on us a few times,
But we didn’t care about that.

Now I’m a grown up and life’s not a show
And the taxes will crucify me.
But once in a while I’ll watch a tape and I’ll laugh
At ourselves in two thousand and three.

Wrote this song in the backyard
Thinkin’ about those days, and I kinda miss them.
I was in love with the intensity of teenagery,
I didn’t think about that.

Now I’m a grown up and life’s not a show
And the taxes will crucify me.
But I realize that everything’s exactly the same
As it was in two thousand and three.

Met my friends in the backyard.

Holy crap. 2003. Eight freaking years. Can't believe it was that long ago. Great song, man. --Neff
