I Can't Write A Love Song
Songwriter Gary Laymon
“I Can’t Write Love Song” was inspired by a series of letters written from home to one of our millitary fighting during WWII. The real twist is that these letters were written only a few short years ago.
I was picking up my wife from her job at a nursing home and this sweet little lady stopped me and asked me if I’d mail a letter for her because no one else would do so. I said “Sure” and tucked the letter inside my jacket.
I forgot to mail it, so laid it on the counter and so I made sure to the following day. Upon closer examination I realized the mailing address was an active duty WWII serviceman’s adress. Intrigued, I opened the letter and read it. It was to her husband who had been deployed the morning following their wedding.
After much consideration, a couple weeks later I set down and wrote her a quick vague reply “from him”. The next day, I dropped by to inform her I had indeed mailed her letter as she had asked. I then told her she could just give them to me from here on out if she wished.
We wrote back and forth for serveral months before she passed. In her things she had left a letter for her daughter to give to me. I opened it up and there were two simple powerful words, Thank you.
This song was insired by one of her letters to her husband and her feelings of despair longing to be by his side. I am but thankful I was fortunate enough to be a part of it all.
