THE LESSON

I saw her in a music store in Fort Worth, Texas
I’d driven in to buy some strings
It was like getting hit by a little fist in my solar plexis
when she said, “Can you help me tune this thing?”
She had a smile. A thin disguise
One big question mark hiding in her eyes

I met her in a music store in Fort Worth, Texas
She had a broken guitar
I said, “Honey, let me check this,”
and then I helped her find the part
And then she said, “Do you teach lessons?”
I said , “Meet me down at Trinity Park.”
I took my old Chevy. She followed in her Lexus
It wasn’t very far

I showed her how to play E minor
I told her some day I’d teach her to play C
Behind her smile and her eye liner
There was something she was trying to say to me

I met her in a music store in Fort Worth, Texas
She had a broken heart
I said, “Meet me at the Waffle House for breakfast.
The one down by Trinity Park…
She had a smile. A thin disguise
One big question mark hiding in her eyes

I showed her how to play E minor
One day I’d teach her to play C
Behind her smile and her eye lines
I could tell she recognized me

I met her in a music store in Fort Worth, Texas
She had a broken guitar
Now I sit across from her every morning at breakfast
I call her My Ala carte
And I call her when I’m feeling lonely
I call her when I’m feeling sad
And sometimes I call her for no reason
It’s just that I’m feeling glad
I met her in a music store in Fort Worth, Texas
