GHOST TOWN capo @ 2 in C
C Em F G C
I live in a ghost town out on the edge of space
C Em F G
Everything is dusty, but everything is in it’s place
Am Em F G C
All the doors hang open and when it rains I shake
C stepping down F G C
I live in a ghost town since you went away…
I live in a ghost town somewhere lost to time
Where everything is frozen and love is the only crime
All the windows broken and all the wells pumped dry
And I’ve lived in a ghost town since you said goodbye
Am Em
Where was I when the well went dry
F G C
Where am I today
C stepping down F G C
I’m here, in this ghost town since you went away.
Out here on this desert the sun is not my friend
Up against this mountain where the timbers in the mine shaft bend
All the vanes are gutted. All the treasure spent.
I’ve lived in a ghost town wondering where it went
And stepping from the darkness into the setting sun
I stumble on a metaphor someone dropped on their last run
With only words to fight the fates I polish up my gun
I’ll be the ghost that got away when this song is done.
Where was I when the well went dry
And where am I today
I’ll be the ghost that rode a bullet to a better place.

I wrote a lot of suicide songs back then…much of me just died on it’s own.
Robert Hayden fyi Robert Hayden thanks JMT I doubt that I will try to cover this one, but I appreciate your creative genius none the less. I do cover several cof your works when I play. To me that is the highest form of a compliment, to have one of your works covered by other musicians.
I still think it's the best song of yours I've ever heard, the imagery and the words just work so well with the melody and the pacing.
Naad Kaur Khalsa Well that was just gorgeous...beautiful poetry in its own right...all the way through, lovley lyric, lovley playing polished and easy tonkick bk to despite the ghostly disappearing act...which actually I quite enjoyed Like ReplyHide2h Active James Michael Taylor Naad Kaur Khalsa Thank you for listening and commenting... Like Reply1h Active Naad Kaur Khalsa James Michael Taylor my absolute pleasure...was really fun...you're in TX right? What town? Your whole vibe is so there...it just has me grinning from ear to ear ....so much of the American I love...from my uniquely un-American vantage point
Randy Brown I think everyone was hesitant to encourage the final solution. I love the melody and the sadness of the lyrics.
Dene Colwill You are truly one of the greatest song writers of this decade. Right there with Paul Simon and Gordon Lightfoot in my opinion. All I can say off that sadness and anger is still strong pray to God for peace as only he holds the way to you being able to let b it go. You can't change other people or events that have happened, but you can learn to forgive and change how YOU react to them. If you ever feel nobody cares or will listen, call me. I'll find time and make the time to meet with you or listen over the phone. Don't let depression or anger beat you down for too long old friend. Like Reply2h Active James Michael Taylor I write songs to explain my situation to myself. Considering it all I might just be the happiest person I know.
Your imagery, as always, is superb, Jim: poignant and compelling. Comparing the lasting effects of a broken relationship to a ghost town made me feel close to tears.
Brian Gagnon I fought this feeling by staying angry. 30+ years later, I'm still angry.
Ken Gaines Well, my friend, I'm glad you haven't ridden that bullet yet. Meanwhile, I miss swapping songs with you.
David Young Very sad song but your lyrics are wonderfully written, as always. You are a musical treasure!
