Bleeding Wounds

A song without longing
Echoes through the café
All the drunks, all the junkies
Sing as if they were praying
The overweight waitress
Dances, plays air guitar
You left me with nothing
But just a beer at the bar

On a cardboard beer coaster
You wrote thanks, au revoir
Raise a glass, bring a toast to
bleeding wounds, burning scars
Till I pass out and memories
appear to be distant stars
of some ancient century
but still close to the bar

Cripple Jim and Blind Willy
Both with their heads on a plate
If they’re sleeping in gravy
It must be way, way past eight
The overweight waitress
Trips, falls on bottles and jars
Blood mingles with liquor
And my beer at the bar

On a cardboard beer coaster
You wrote thanks, au revoir
Raise a glass, bring a toast to
bleeding wounds, burning scars
Till I pass out and memories
appear to be distant stars
of some ancient century
but still close to the bar
