Down here by the river
Its surface used to shine
I now stare into its mirror
Which is wrinkled in due time
My younger days
My younger ways
Like Jesus bugs they water skate
And like mayflies they have passed
Along the way

Down here by the river
I beg you to take me home
I’ve been through all the treadmills
That weigh upon me like a stone
Just one more day
Just one more way
Like Jesus bugs I water skate
And like mayflies I will pass
Along the way

My counterpart of dark and light
Walks on lilies
Dressed in lily-white
I find a home in her embrace
And beg her to just end my days

Down here by the river
The mill no longer grinds
With water that is past
I left that all behind
These modern days
These modern ways
Like Jesus bugs they water skate
And like mayflies they will pass
Along the way

My counterpart of dark and light
Walks on lilies
Dressed in lily-white
I find a home in her embrace
And beg her to just end my days

Down here by the river
The mill no longer grinds
With water that is past
I left that all behind
I fear no longer,
I’m not afraid
Like Jesus bugs we water skate
And like mayflies we will pass
Along the way
