That's Just What They Want You to Think
Robert James
RPM Challenge 2022 song number 3.
This one is okay. I have a feeling that anytime I work in 6/8 time I come up with exactly this song. I knew the lyrics in the chorus (the second line) were bad but I thought I could live with them. Now, after listening to the song 100 times while mixing, I want to punch myself in the face for letting something this dumb survive the editing process. My heartfelt apologies to anyone who listens. Bob Dylan I ain’t.
The rhythm guitar you hear in your right speaker is a Gibson SG. The left and the lead is a Les Paul Standard. They all went through a Fender Bassbreaker 15 mic’d with an SM57. Pedals for the rhythm tracks are a Keeley Super Phat Mod into a Ryra The Klone. The lead is a Dunlop Fuzz Face into a Klon KTR.
Chorus
That’s just what they want you to think
That method will drive you to drink
2x
Verse
on reflection
your perception
out of focus
misdirection
one passing look
the chance you took
just goes to show you tried
Break
Oh the places you’ll go
all the things you will know
all the faces you’ll see
all the things you could be
Yeah, this way of doing the guitars is paying off for me, big time. I always love your rhythm playing, but these are shining even more. And the lead on this - NICE. Your comment on the 2nd chorus line made me laugh. I'd heard it a couple of times before I read the comment, and I'd thought "cool line!"
