Sugar Free Jam
Robbie put together a 5-minute track (“E Rock Jam”) that was meant to feature a bunch of guitar leads from various folks and maybe some vocals, but the timing never quite worked out to get those laid down. We did, however, record some of John’s great drumming one Saturday, so there were some good bones to work with.
Because Robbie had originally recorded with a metronome and a canned drum loop, it was easy to trim the full song down to a couple of runs through the full chord sequence (labeled “Intro > Verse > Chorusy Part > Walk > Hits” in the Reaper project…). With that done, I recorded some bass, which Robbie again made easier by writing up chord charts for the song.
So, without vocals or lead parts (i.e., the “Sugar”), the abbreviated track became this little jam that could maybe score a particular kind of movie scene, like a fight at a dive bar or two rusted-out ’56 Chevy trucks chasing each other down a dirt road.
