Hold Me When I'm Down

Another lovely song from Leum. He’s prolific, that one is!

It was fun to collaborate on lyrical tweaks for this one, working together to tighten up a solid draft into a rich, compact song.

For recording, we used a couple of condenser mics (one large diaphragm and one small) on the guitars, bass, mandolin, and even the hand percussion. Specifically for the guitars, we were trying to get a fuller sound than that provided by pickups alone. Exterior room noises (studio beer fridge, HVAC fan, squeaky chair) proved mildly vexing after we noticed them in playback, but we found workarounds and the results are pretty satisfying. (We record in Margaret’s lovely studio, which was built for band rehearsals and only later repurposed into a recording space. Totally worth the couple extra troubleshooting steps to get to hang out there! :) )
