Find Another Way
This one started out with me (Kevin) recording some drum parts to a click track after the group wrapped up a Saturday recording session. I took the drum parts home and threw some MIDI keyboard loops over them, consciously trying for a Boards of Canada vibe via a now-removed tape warble effect. I intended to only use the track for my own RPM Challenge EP, but I played it for my bandmates one night and they immediately started coming up with vocal melodies. Margaret said she’d work on some lyrics before the next recording session, and so she did!
She recorded the vocal tracks on her own, using a modern take on the old “bounce between two boomboxes” trick – she played back the instrumental track on her iPhone and recorded the lead vocal part on her iPad, then played that back and recorded the harmony vocals on her iPhone!
She sent the vocal tracks to me just to show me what she had written, with the intention of re-recording clean takes later. We certainly could have done that, but I’ve wanted to try out the new-to-me track separation feature in FL Studio, so I ran the tracks through that process and plopped the results into Reaper. I was pretty satisfied, as the vocals sounded like I’d run them through a plugin to achieve the weird compressed, garbled effect.
We still intended to record clean vocals at a later session, but I recommended that we listen to the whole thing along with the bass track I’d added, and we agreed that the old-school recording process had yielded passable enough results that we wanted to keep those tracks as a tribute to innumerable demo tapes past!

Find Another Way
You are so different from me
In the things you say and do.
Please don’t tell me who to be.
You are the one who can’t see
That the world is not your own.
As you try to take it all,
We are living day by day.
Nothing can stop the decay.
Revolution, institution, violence is no solution.
If we want to live, then we must find another way.
Maybe peace will come if we stop banging the drums of war.
We hold the key to all we need.
We can find how to be free.
If we just release our fear,
Then maybe we’ve planted a seed.
Revolution, institution, violence is no solution.
Maybe peace will come if we stop banging the drums of war.
No, the world is not your own.
Please don’t try to take it all.
We are living day by day.
Can anything stop the decay?
