Kenny kept this song in his back pocket for a couple of years after an especially sweet revelation/confession from a couple of friends. The origins were specific, but as with lots of good songs, the lyrics could describe any number of situations.

This one was quite a scattered collaboration. We laid down the acoustic guitar and vocals on the second Saturday in February (2/11), then I added drums the evening of 2/18 and bass on 2/19. Dan then recorded a couple of takes of Mark Knopfler-style leads and guitar flourishes at the studio on Saturday 2/25. After I’d edited/comped those takes together on Sunday the 26th, Kenny brought over an SD card on the 27th with new piano parts for the whole song and a new bass part he’d recorded for the bridge. Later that day, Robbie uploaded some electric guitar parts he’d recorded at home, unaware that Dan had already recorded some parts earlier. I ended up not using Robbie’s leads but did use the rhythm parts to fill in the rest of the song alongside the piano, acoustic guitar, and Dan’s flourishes/leads. I think the end result is full-bordering-on-busy, but not quite “Wall Of Sound” busy. That’s just me, though. :)
