By d'Each
Well one fine morning I went out
To the docks to get a feed
There was Skipper Thomas Payne
With a bucket of fish from the sea
So I emptied out me wallet
“Sir will this cover your fee”?
He said “No my’son it won’t buy the lot,
Not even by d’each”
Well up the mainland we did go
The by’s from the cove and me
To find ourselves employment in a pallet factory
Well we all walked in but the foreman said
“I’ll just have him and he,
Cause I’m not hiring by the lot. I’m hiring by d’each”
By d’each, By d’each
Well I know it’s to the choir that I preach
Well some they say that life’s OK
Some say it’s a big ol’peach
They got dollars by the handful
While I’m losing by d’each
So I went back to The Island
And I laid down on the beach
Waited for the tide to come and take me out to sea
Then I spied the fairest angel
Smiling down on me
She said “You can’t troubles by the lot,
You gotta take’em by d’each”.
And with that she disappeared
And I was left without speech
For that bonnie lassie was the finest girl I’d seen
And now to find that angel
Well the whole world I will reach
Cause heaven’s not makin’em by the lot
They’re makin’em by d’each.
By d’each, By d’each
Well I know it’s to the choir that I preach
Well some they say that life’s OK
Some say it’s a big ol’peach
They got dollars by the handful
While I’m losing by d’each
By d’each, By d’each
Well I know it’s to the choir that I preach
Well in this world there’s troubles by’s
And now we’re in neck deep
But I don’t take troubles by the lot
I takes’em by d’each
No I don’t take troubles by the lot
I takes’em by d’each
