Isn’t This Fun - A A J Russe
Written 1980 (Completed 16th June 1991)
Recorded 6th March 2022
The Shoebox Demos Vol 1

I wrote most of this in my first year at university.

But the Shoebox says I completed it 16/06/1991 - and the Shoebox never lies! LOL

In 1980 it didn’t feel “finished” to me. But I think that was more about being inexperienced as a songwriter. It had issues but it was all there. The inexperienced songwriter used to add more stuff to “finish” a song. Later on I realised you fix the existing stuff or, more likely, take some away, to “finish” a song (and you can use the discarded stuff for another song later!).

Anyway, 1991 or so was when I realised I ought to start cataloguing all these songs.

I remember not knowing where to fit this one or whether it was finished. And I remember recognising what was wrong, fixing a few things, and declaring it finished… so I dated it 1991 and called it number 174 in the long list.

But, really, it’s a 1980 song that never got used because some of the bits were clunkier than they are now.

Isn’t This Fun - A A J Russe

Everyone knows a mistake has been made
But they smile as you walk through the door
The hypocrites laugh at the jokes that you make
Hoping you won’t stay for more

They hand you the glass with a chip in the side
You notice the drink is no longer alive
Joking aside it could still hurt your pride
But they’re worthless and weak, as you know

Isn’t this fun
Isn’t this fun
Isn’t this fun
To know you’re still someone

You’re asking a fool if he likes what you write
The fool never reads anything
The fool says you work it shines out like a light
You know that your work’s in the bin

Isn’t this fun
Isn’t this fun
Isn’t this fun
To know you’re still someone

You turn to your host - she remembers your name
Except it’s not your name at all
She remembers the time that you danced so divine
At her very first charity ball

But she doesn’t recall how you were the one
Who, for her daughter, provided the bun
Then in the night took off at a run
It seems you’re worthless and weak like us all

Isn’t this fun
Isn’t this fun
Isn’t this fun
To know you’re still someone
