A Song for Tim (Original Version)

Tim Chandler was a tall man with a big heart and a great sense of humor. He was the bassist for a number of bands including Daniel Amos, The Choir, and The Swirling Eddies. He also played bass on sessions and tours for Phil Keaggy, Randy Stonehill, Tonio K, and others. I was fortunate to have met him at a music festival in 1997 and we stayed in touch over the years.

In the years that bass was my primary instrument, Tim was one of my biggest influences. Isolate the bass tracks on anything he played on and you’ll find some of the oddest, most creative bass lines around. I can’t say that I even came close to what he did, but I certainly tried. If I was covering a tune he played on, he was generous enough to give me insight when I needed it.

Tim passed away in October, 2018. When I started the 2019 RMP Challenge project, I came across a bit of a demo I did the previous year and decided to work it up. As it came together, it started to have a Choir vibe to it so I decided to dedicate it to Tim. What do you call a song dedicated to Tim? “A Song for Tim” naturally. I miss him.

This is the original mix as it appeared on my 2019 RPM album, “The Dark Side of the Moo.” On August 25, 2020, I added strings and remixed it. Listen to both and see what you think.

I enjoyed it, a floydish mellow tune. Leaves a trace of light.
