The Irish emigrated to England in the decades following the second world war. And one of the jobs they commonly held was laying “hot asphalt” this song chronicles an encounter with an unfortunate policeman who ended up falling into a barrel “full of hot asphalt”. Recorded by the Dubliners among others.
