THE SWEATER (Knockin' Some Balls Around) 121211 - COOKIES
THE SWEATER
I gave her a ring. She gave me a sweater
Powder blue pull-over, handsome and cool
As long as I wore it, I couldn’t forget her
One night at a pool hall five blocks from the school
I laid down my quarter and I picked me a pool cue
Stepped up to the bar, ordered a brew
Nursing my drink, burning a Lucky
Not the sort of thing good Christian college boys do
Abilene’s arid, just mesquite and cactus
Out west in Texas. A three church-college town
I played me some pool. Got some much-needed practice
Knockin’ some, knocking’ some balls around.
Just knocking’ the balls around
Feeling my way in this town
The night that I lost it, no thot of the cost
Just knockin’ some balls around
In the dead of winter they turned on the heater
And the juke box, that hi-country sound
I pulled off the sweater and forgot all about it
Knockin’ some, knockin’ some balls around
Knockin’ some balls around
Feelin’ my way in this town
Life passed me by.
I don’t laugh. I don’t cry
Gets me up. Gets me down.
Just knocking’ some balls around
Tell me, what is the point
In this cosmic juke joint
Just a wink and a sigh…
Knockin’ some balls around
I gave her a ring. She gave me a sweater…
