On page thirty of the yearbook he found a picture sweet
A girl named Marie Angel, in school right down the street

C Am F G
Oh, Jimmy!
That night he told his mother he’d finally found the one
She smiled and hugged her angel. She said, “That’s wonderful, son.”
She didn’t stop to ask him who this girl could be.
Oh, Jimmy! Oh, Jimmy!
Later in the evening, something on her mind
Prompted her to ask about her darling’s loving find
He said, “I found her picture in a book at Dugan’s store.” Oh, Jimmy! Oh, Jimmy!
He said, “Her (Bb) name is Marie Angel,” and his (A) mom began to cry.
She (Bb) couldn’t even say the words when (A) Jimmy asked her, “Why?”
Dm Step down…to G
How do you keep a secret you always thot was best?
Oh, Jimmy! Oh, Jimmy!
On page ninety the yearbook is a picture of that girl
She stands by Jimmy’s father.
King and queen of the Homecoming world.
Nobody seemed to notice the queen was great with child.
Oh, Jimmy! Oh, Jimmy!
Bb A
No more words were spoken about that day again
Jimmy bought the yearbook and he holds it now and then
Dm walk down
Perhaps some things are best left unspoken if you can.
Oh, Jimmy! Oh, Jimmy!

One night when I was at Lisa’s in Nashville we had been writing a song called HICKORY STIX. Before we finished it, Lisa went off to bed. I still had some energy left and an idea about a picture of a girl I’d seen in Mom’s 1939 high school yearbook. Her name was Marie Angel. All the kids in the book looked old fashioned but Marie looked alive, familiar. That picture had haunted me. I’d asked Mom about her but she didn’t remember her. I wrote this song that night.
I was trying to figure out the backstory here, at first I thought the girl might be the mom. But she doesn't seem to be even though she's standing beside the boy's father great with child. So the mind can come up with all sorts of interesting scenarios. You're probably right not to explain it, let the listener create their own story.
Yes, it is obvious to anyone who actually listens to follow the story. The killer line ... the picture that finishes breaking what's left of the listener's heart is "but Jimmy bought the yearbook, and he hold it now and then". Lazarus Knight
Oh Jimmy rings of a certain kind of pain that you've captured perfectly. Lazarath Knight.
I really like the subtlety of this one Goldyn
