ANYTHING BUT CRY
Key C 4/4
It could be a merry Christmas
There’s a place called Pearl’s Dance Hall at the Stockyards in Fort Worth
Once a house of prostitution in it’s first days on this earth
Tommy Hooker has a band that plays on Wednesday nights
I go there and grab a chair and anything but cry.
I watch that girl with short black hair dancing with some kid
She smiles and whispers in his ear as they slip and slide and skid
Kicking up the saw dust and polishing the floor
If I had a lick of sense I wouldn’t go there any more
Let’s have a merry Christmas. It could be a merry Christmas
She licks her pointy finger and sticks it in his ear
He backs into the Christmas tree and Tommy says, “Oh, dear.”
And tangled in the wires they unplug all the lights
If I could just control myself I’d do anything but cry
I know she’s not you C Em
but every time she dances by F C
It’s a gathering of memories. Am Em
I do everything but cry F G
And when they turn the lights back on I’m asking myself why
And how can I do anything, anything but cry
It could be a merry Christmas…
