In New Zealand we have a major problem with gambeling addiction. It destroys lives and blows families apart and nothing’s being done to stop it. We have a small casino in every bar and while the companies that run the machines give some of their profits to community grants, they rarely give back to the community as much as they’ve sucked out of it. As I was recording the sound effects at the start and end of the song I went to a bar at 10am on a tuesday, there were 3 senior citizens throwing their pensions away, and a pair of polynesian women staring glassy eyed at the machines. I waited just long enough to get the recordings I needed and had to leave. It was too sad.

It should be said that the song is about the bloodthirsty companies that run the machines, if it were about the victims it’d be called ‘Never Giving Up on You’
